Description Of Mechanism


A capacitor stores charge. One of their main uses is to flatten currents, by storing charge when the current is high and releasing it when it's low. Another one is as a sort of rechargeable batteries. The capacitor has two distinct chargeable parts, separated by an insulator. When you connect a pole to a cable, the other end of this to a battery, the other end of the battery to the other pole via a second cable, the condenser gets charged. Take out the battery, the circuit is open and the charges in the two halves of the condenser stay where they are. Connect a light bulb where the battery had previously been: the charges see the group cable plus light bulb as an easy path, they move, that's electric current, so you get light.That's the speedy back of the envelope explanation. You can charge the capacitor using sources of electric power other than a battery, and of course you can use its charge to power things more complex than a light bulb.

There are several types of capacitor, Lead Wires, Capacitor Plates, Sensing Diaphragm, Rigid Insulation, Oil Fills (Dielectric), Welded Seals, and Isolating Diaphragm. A Lead Wire is an electric wire that connects to a power source and is physically located in front of the direction of welding. A two conducting plates (Capacitor Plates) separated by insulating material surrounded by further insulation as a protective jacket and external wires to allow the capacitor to be connected into a circuit. And on large units, a protective case made of material or plastic and external terminals connected internally to the plates, to allow the capacitor to be connected into a circuit.

Process Description


When capacitors are connected in parallel with a battery, electric charge from the negative terminal of the battery travels to the negative terminal of the capacitor where it is accepted. On the other hand, the positive terminal of the capacitor loses electrons which travel to the positive terminal of the battery. Although the electric charge is not stored instantaneously, the process is much faster than the charging process of a battery, or of an accumulator.

Capacitors are used for several purposes, Timing, Smoothing, Coupling, Filtering, Tuning, and Storing Energy. Timing is used with a 555 timer IC controlling the charging and discharging. Smoothing is used in a power supply. Coupling is used between stages of an audio system and to connect a loudspeaker. Filtering is used in the tone control of an audio system. Tuning is used in a radio system. Storing Energy is used in a camera flash circuit.

Classification Paragraph


There are many types of capacitors according to its uses, ability, capability and application. The first one is the variable capacitor that has a changeable capacitance. Electrolytic capacitor that is used for high capacitance. Spherical capacitor that is sphere in shape. Power capacitor that is used in high voltage power systems. Ceramic capacitor that has a dielectric material and has high voltage functionality. Tantalum capacitor that is oxide dielectric material and has high capacitance. Mica capacitor that is the only capacitor with high accuracy and the paper capacitor that is a paper dielectric material.

Cause and Effect


Ewald Georg von Kleist connected a generator by a wire to a volume of water. He used his hand and the water as conductors and the jar as a dielectric. The absence of the generator from the wire resulted a spark when touching it. A Dutch Physicist appeared because of Georg's discovery and created a same capacitor named Leyden Jar. By the following year, because of the Leyden Jar's existence, Daniel Gralath became the first to combine several jars in parallel in to a battery that resulted to an increase in the storage capacity.
